The Bellingham Herald June 16, 2003 Letter to the Editor In today's society we are all wondering "What's up?" National debit is sky-rocking, people are polarised around slogans and 30-second news bites. Are we really more secure? Are we as a people growing and learning from the past? As time passes we store mixed messages from our families and society, resulting in some good and some not so good memories. Mass media advertising sends us scripted messages of what we need to purchase or believe in to conform or be happy. The good news is we all posses the ability for fresh thought in the present, no matter what our circumstances or situations. This natural ability is a simple yet profound part of our human make-up. Just as we breathe or our hearts beat we think. Given the fact that we also have free will, we can be selective as to what thoughts we focus on or not. Hence we are all free thinkers. When we realize how we can function,we begin to let go of old stale opinions, prejudices, habits and beliefs. Positive change is automatically set in motion, and problems are seen from a wiser, calmer perspective allowing for new insights and strength to create an enjoyable, life .
